The
late '60s and early '70s were very chaotic in religious life as they
were in the rest of the country. Results of the 1962-1965 Vatican
II Council were unfolding and a lot of changes were taking place in
the Church. All religious communities were trying to grasp the changes,
but it was like trying to hold water in your hands. It was nothing
short of a major upheaval. Pope John XXIII had given Roman Catholic
religious communities their marching orders. They needed to change,
and to expand their thinking and their ministry to more accurately
reflect the changing times and needs in society. This was a very difficult
stretch for all communities, for some more than others. They were
being asked to leap beyond what they had been accustomed to over the
past 75 to 100 years, several centuries in some cases. This was more
than a change in thinking. Individually and collectively, it was a
fundamental change in identity. There was no blueprint, no road map,
no footprints to follow. |
